American manufacturing has been climbing out of the hole created by the pandemic recession—but it’s been a tough climb and there are plenty of obstacles remaining. Factories gained 15,000 jobs in June, according to figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, but overall the sector remains down 481,000 jobs since February 2020.
